We received a handheld device a few years ago at Christmas and used it for the first time on a trip to Quebec. Our planned route had us crossing the river by ferry which sent our GPS into a panic. She instructed "Turn back now, road ends in 500m", "Turn back now, road ends in 100m", "Turn back now, road ends in 50m". We imagined panic in her voice until we drove onto the ferry and then she went silent.
