Recalculating . . .

I guess this is really just a private joke in my family that I'm sharing today.  We never had a vehicle with a navigation system, but when we took the kids to Europe for the first time in 2005 we rented a car in Germany (they upgraded us to a BMW although we had paid for a compact!) that had a built-in system. It provided some good laughs.  First we couldn't figure out how to change the language from German to English, so I was constantly shouting translations from the passenger seat.  Then, once we switched the navi to English, we got the giggles over how often and indifferently the "voice lady" would say, "Re-calcu-la-ting . . . " every time we stopped for gas or an unexpected sight or somehow got lost.  Guess you had to be there . . . .

  1. Haha! Is that a German thing? Don't do American navigation system that? Our favourite is "die Route wird neu berechnet..." yeah - I know what you are talking about and had a good laugh! Thanks.

    Greetings from Germany

  2. We have a similar family private joke about a GPS lady. We received a handheld device a few years ago at Christmas and used it for the first time on a trip to Quebec. Our planned route had us crossing the river by ferry which sent our GPS into a panic. She instructed "Turn back now, road ends in 500m", "Turn back now, road ends in 100m", "Turn back now, road ends in 50m". We imagined panic in her voice until we drove onto the ferry and then she went silent. A couple of minutes after disembarking the ferry she came back to life with "Re-calcu-la-ting"!!

  3. Ours just shouts at us a lot. "You have missed your turn. Make a u-turn. Make a u-turn!" She's a bossy little computerized voice! Thanks for following Pretty Nameless, I'm following you back!

  4. That is too funny! I love your site--such fab posts. I am following you back from the PS Beauty Blog :)
